Integrated storage, lighting and power

Most headboard walls carry more function than is immediately obvious – from power sockets and switches to storage for books, devices and personal items.

• integrated reading lights, ambient lighting and sometimes decorative fixtures, all coordinated with the wider lighting scheme

Materials, upholstery and tactility

Headboards are some of the most tactile elements in a bedroom. Materials and detailing need to feel inviting up close, while still reading cleanly from the door.

We build palettes from our Materials library – timbers, veneers, lacquers, stones, metals and upholstery – and align them with stylistic directions set out on Joinery Styles.

• full-height upholstered headboards for softer, more cocooning schemes, often paired with simpler flanking joinery

Where headboard walls run into wardrobes, desks or window seats, we make sure junctions between upholstery and joinery are drawn in detail and tested with samples.

Working with existing architecture

Bedrooms often come with quirks – off-centre windows, sloping ceilings, radiators, existing panelling. We treat these not as obstacles but as starting points for the composition.

• using panelling or full-height backdrops to visually recentre a bed where openings are asymmetrical

In period properties we are careful around original mouldings and details; in contemporary buildings we may use headboard walls to introduce rhythm and depth where the base fabric is more minimal.
