James Fiddy began his career in furniture at The Conran Shop on Marylebone High Street, in the furniture department. The role was retail-facing — meeting private clients, designers and architects across the counter and the showroom floor — but the underlying education was about how clients actually choose pieces. What they ask. What they don't. What goes wrong between a confident showroom decision and a piece arriving in a finished room. That period taught him to read a brief from both sides: the designer specifying it and the household receiving it.

From The Conran Shop he joined an independent furniture dealer in Clerkenwell, working over a longer period closer to the makers, the materials and the decisions that determine whether a piece reads as considered or compromised. The work moved him a step closer to production. Trade buyers, designer accounts, occasional direct commissions. The materials library he was working from was a workshop's library rather than a showroom's, and the conversations were about how a piece would be made rather than whether the client liked it. That was the shift that mattered.

The decisive next role — sales manager for a furniture manufacturer based in China — ran for nine years. The work gave him a working knowledge of manufacturing at scale: timber selection from raw stock, finishing techniques across veneer, lacquer and stone, quality control protocols built around what fails most often, freight logistics across half the world, and the gap that always exists between an approved sample and what eventually arrives on site. He learned, in detail, where bespoke commissions go wrong and what it takes to keep them on track. He also learned that the language of bespoke — "hand-finished", "made to specification", "individually crafted" — is used by everyone in the industry, but the actual standard varies enormously between makers. What separates a good maker from an average one is rarely the headline craft. It's the small decisions made at every stage when nobody is watching.

James founded Make Bespoke Studio in 2021 to put that knowledge into a different shape. The studio was built around a single principle: the designer or architect deals with one person, and that person stays responsible from the first brief through to the installed piece. No farming-out, no excuses about subcontractors, no handovers where the brief gets lost. The network of specialist manufacturing partners — in the UK and Europe, chosen for mastery of a specific discipline — was built piece by piece, with each workshop signed off only after sample commissions had run through it. The studio works to interior designers, architects and developers — not direct to private clients except by designer referral. The approach is unchanged from the principle on day one: read the drawings, respect the design intent, build to specification rather than to convenience, and stay responsible for what's delivered. Recent and ongoing commissions include 77 London (interiors by Concrete Amsterdam), the wider Maybourne portfolio — including completed work at The Grill at The Dorchester, Maybourne Riviera and Mandarin Oriental Residences Beverly Hills — contract work at The BoTree, Marylebone, LAVO London, and 5 St James's Square private offices. Residential commissions span Mayfair, Knightsbridge, Chelsea, Holland Park, St James's and Notting Hill.

James handles every enquiry personally. The studio is at 4.13 Hardwick House, Waterfront Drive, Chelsea Harbour, London SW10 0JR, with the materials library held on-site for designer visits.
