Stone is used in furniture and joinery for surfaces that need to carry weight, resist moisture and age well — dining tables, kitchen islands, bar tops, vanity surfaces, hearths and decorative wall panels. Make Bespoke Studio works with marble, limestone, travertine, quartzite, onyx and granite, sourcing directly from quarries in Italy and Turkey.

Italian marble — Calacatta, Statuario, Carrara — remains the benchmark for high-specification residential work. Turkish quarries supply a broader range of colours and patterns across marble, limestone and travertine, at price points suited to larger hospitality commissions. Stone is selected in person at the slab yard where possible, ensuring that grain, veining and colour are approved before cutting.

Slabs are cut to the required thickness — typically 20mm or 30mm for tops, 12mm or 15mm for wall cladding — and finished to a polished, honed, leathered or brushed surface. Bookmatching opens adjacent slabs to create a mirrored vein pattern across a joint. Edge profiles, corbels and carved details are cut to specification. All stone tops are templated on-site after the supporting structure is in position.

Sourced at the quarry, not the yard

We buy stone where it comes out of the ground: Italian quarries for most residential work, and Turkish quarries for hospitality projects, where one of the world’s oldest marble-producing geographies — quarried continuously for some 4,000 years — offers more than 80 stone types in over 400 colours and patterns. Buying direct matters for more than price: it means slabs are selected for the specific commission, sequenced from the same block where veining must flow across a run, and reserved before fabrication begins.

Marble, granite, limestone

The three families divide by temperament. Marble is the expressive one — veined, luminous, soft enough to carve and polish to depth, and best placed where its tendency to patina is part of the charm rather than a complaint. Granite is the workhorse: dense, hard and nearly indifferent to heat and scratching, suited to kitchens and bar tops that take punishment. Limestone is the quiet one — even-toned, matte and architectural, from pale Portland beds to blue-grey and fossil-flecked varieties, at home on floors, fireplaces and bathrooms where calm matters more than drama. Where the brief asks for marble’s look with granite’s resilience, quartzite answers it.

Process

Finishes and fabrication

The same slab reads differently by surface: polished for full colour and reflection, honed for a soft matte that forgives fingermarks and etching, brushed or leathered for texture underhand. We fabricate to the piece — book-matched slabs across a bathroom wall, mitred waterfall edges on islands, drum-shaped vanities and turned table bases — and coordinate weight, fixing and substrate with the joinery the stone meets.

Living with stone

Natural stone is sealed at installation and resealed periodically; spills are wiped rather than left; and marble in particular is allowed its slow accumulation of character. Samples and slab photographs are part of every quotation, and where a commission justifies it, clients and designers are welcome at the yard to choose their block.
