Vetrazzo is a recycled-glass surface in the terrazzo family. Large fragments of reclaimed glass are set into a cement-based binder, then ground and polished to reveal a dense field of colour and reflection. The result reads as a worktop and a record at once: each piece of glass keeps the character of where it came from.
It is specified in considered interiors for the depth that recycled glass gives a surface. Where engineered quartz tends toward uniformity, Vetrazzo is openly varied. Fragments sit at different angles, catch light differently across the slab, and carry colour all the way through rather than as a printed pattern. The cement matrix grounds the glass with a soft, matte body, so the finished surface has both sparkle and weight.
The recycled content is the point, not a postscript. Glass is drawn from sources such as stained-glass windows, traffic signals, bottles and mirror, with the glass making up the large majority of the slab. With pigments and other recycled additives the material reaches around 85 per cent recycled content, which lets it stand as a genuine sustainability statement rather than a stylistic gesture.

The glass is sorted by colour and source, crushed and graded, then combined with the binder, pigments and other recycled additives. Because the aggregate is glass rather than stone, the surface holds colour with real clarity: fragments range from fine grains to large, deliberately placed pieces, and the proportion of large to small glass is part of how each colour is composed.
The binder is the second character in the material. As a cementitious matrix it gives the slab its body and its matte ground, in contrast to the bright glass it surrounds. This is what separates Vetrazzo from resin-bound terrazzo and from quartz: it is a true cast surface, with the colour running through the full thickness rather than sitting on top.
The defining quality is depth. Light enters the glass, reflects and refracts, and gives the surface a sense of movement that a printed or pigmented pattern cannot reproduce. Colours run from quiet neutrals through to saturated blues, greens and reds, and the scale of the glass shifts the mood: fine aggregate reads as a calm, even field, while larger fragments give a bolder, more graphic terrazzo. Because the glass is recovered from many sources, no two slabs are identical, and the variation is intended rather than a flaw to be matched out.
Vetrazzo is chosen as much for what it is made from as for how it looks. The slab reaches around 85 per cent recycled content, drawing glass from waste streams such as bottles, mirror, stained-glass windows and signal lenses that would otherwise be difficult to reuse. For projects working to environmental targets this matters twice: the surface diverts glass from landfill, and its recycled content can be documented in sustainability reporting. It is a finished, durable surface that carries its environmental story on its face.
The standard finish is ground and polished, which opens up the glass and gives a smooth, reflective surface. A honed treatment is also possible where a softer, lower-sheen look suits the scheme, reading more matte while keeping the glass visible. A patina option lets the cement matrix take on a mottled, aged tone against the glass, which shifts the slab toward a more antique, weathered character. Finish is chosen to suit both the room and the way the surface will be used.
Vetrazzo works well as worktops and counters, particularly kitchen islands and bar tops where the surface is seen at close range and the recycled glass can be appreciated. It also suits vanities, splashbacks, table and console tops, and reception or lobby surfaces. As a feature material it can be used for wall panels and cladding, where it brings colour and reflection without the weight considerations of a heavily loaded horizontal run. It sits comfortably alongside terrazzo and Foresso timber terrazzo in the recycled family of our materials library.
Because Vetrazzo includes a cementitious binder, the surface is sealed and benefits from periodic resealing to keep it resistant to staining and moisture. Day to day care is straightforward: wipe with warm water and a mild, pH-neutral cleaner, and avoid strongly acidic products, which can etch the cement, and abrasive pads, which can dull the polish. With sealing kept up to date the surface stands up well to everyday use, and minor wear can usually be refreshed by re-polishing rather than replacement. Like any cast surface it should be protected from sustained heat and from heavy point impact.
We supply and integrate Vetrazzo as part of bespoke joinery and surface schemes. Slabs are templated to the design, cut and edged to suit the piece, and the colour is selected with the application in mind. We sample actual offcuts so the fragment mix, colour and finish are approved in hand rather than on screen, and we coordinate fabrication and installation through our workshop network so edges, junctions and any integrated sinks or returns are resolved as a single detail.

The components undergo several steps of grinding before being rolled out into slabs with unique designs. The slabs then go through curing and polishing processes that give them their aesthetic appeal and shine.
