The most sustainable piece of furniture is the one that never needs replacing. That is the whole of our position, and everything else on this page follows from it: we build to a specification intended to last decades rather than seasons, and we keep the records that make repair possible years after delivery.
We are a London studio that manufactures through a network of partner factories in Turkey, Italy and Poland. We do not own those factories, so we do not present their environmental performance as our own. What we do control is who we choose to work with and what we specify into every piece. Our principal manufacturing partners hold ISO 14001 environmental management, ISO 45001 occupational health and safety, ISO 50001 energy management, ISO 9001 quality management and FSC chain of custody, each independently audited and renewed.
On the specification side we use solid wood and wood veneer constructions that can be repaired and refinished rather than discarded, and we avoid MDF and particle board in high-wear applications, preferring engineered timber or solid structures that can be taken apart, repaired and returned to service. Producing close to where materials originate reduces long-haul freight for both raw materials and finished goods, and shipments are consolidated to cut transport frequency.
A single cubic metre of felled log yields around 900m² of veneer at 0.6mm — some forty-five times the surface area the same log would give as solid planks. Laid over a stable engineered substrate, that is the difference between panelling one room and panelling forty-five.
Veneer is also selective rather than extractive. Only about 3% of felled trees are suitable for veneer production at all, and of those only around 15% produce a grade good enough to specify — under half a percent of total forest and woodland output. The remainder of the log is not wasted; it simply goes to other uses.
Our principal veneer supplier holds FSC and PEFC chain of custody and is an audited member of Timber Development UK. The majority of the veneer we specify is certified under one of those schemes, and supply is tracked from source to delivery.
The honest qualifier is that not all of it is. Speciality veneers often come from small sources that sit outside FSC forestry criteria while still being responsibly harvested. Rather than quietly drop those from the story, they go through a wider due-diligence assessment before we will use them.
This assessment is run on every species, for every delivery — not once at the point of approving a supplier.
Solid frames, replaceable components and finishes that can be cut back and repaired rather than stripped. Nothing is built to a specification we would not expect to see still in service in twenty years.
Veneer is laid over stable engineered substrates rather than solid stock that will move with the seasons. We avoid MDF and particle board in high-wear applications, preferring structures that can be taken apart and repaired.
Water-based adhesives, and water-based paints, stains and varnishes held to international low-VOC limits. Metal finishes use PVD coating rather than wet electroplating.
Steel is REACH compliant and free of Substances of Very High Concern. Foams pass RoHS testing: no lead, mercury, cadmium or hexavalent chromium, and no PBB or PBDE flame retardants.
Packaging is fully recyclable, with cardboard made predominantly from recycled content and protective bags in biodegradable film. Road freight is used in preference to air for European deliveries, and shipments from our partner factories to the UK and Europe move on carbon-offset certified transport.
We archive the finish specification for every project. Years later we can match a colour, a sheen level or a veneer leaf exactly, so one damaged component does not condemn a whole piece.

The furniture and joinery we produce for hotels, restaurants and private homes is specified to endure the conditions of its use, not just to look right on a handover day. For hospitality clients, this means specification-grade construction and commercial-grade hardware. For residential clients, it means solid wood structures and finishes that can be touched up after years of daily use.
We maintain finish specifications for every project in our archive so that clients can return years later for repair or additional pieces that match exactly. This is not a service, it is the natural consequence of building things properly.
These certifications are held by our principal manufacturing partners and material suppliers, not by Make Bespoke Studio itself. We say so plainly rather than implying otherwise. Each is independently audited and renewed on a regular cycle.
We are not a carbon neutral company, and offsetting our freight does not make us one. We hold no company-level environmental certification of our own; the certifications above belong to our partners. We do not call our furniture eco or green as a product label. What we do is narrower and checkable: we specify for long life, we manufacture with certified partners, and we keep the records that let a piece be repaired instead of replaced.
