The Mandrake

The Mandrake is an independent luxury hotel in Fitzrovia, known throughout the industry for its maximalist, art-filled interiors. Botanical courtyards, curated artworks and richly layered spaces give the property an atmosphere that is wholly its own, a setting where every object is chosen with intense attention to character.

Make Bespoke Studio's partners contributed bespoke furniture and decorative joinery to several of the hotel's distinctive spaces. Pieces were finished in lacquer, natural stone and hand-applied gilding detail, chosen to complement the hotel's eclectic art collection and sit with authority within one of London's most design-led hospitality environments.

The Mandrake sits in a converted office block on Newman Street in Fitzrovia, opened in 2017 as an independent hotel built around art, botany and a deliberate departure from boutique-hotel convention. The interiors layer Renaissance allegory with Eastern textile, marble, dark wood and brass, organised around a botanical courtyard planted with passion flowers, jasmine and night-blooming species. Each room carries its own commissioned artwork; no two are alike.

The hotel’s public spaces — the Waeska bar, the Jurema Terrace, YOPO restaurant — share a single materiality: deep colour, dense pattern, polished metal, and surfaces that read as collected rather than specified. Bespoke furniture sits at the centre of that scheme; in an interior where nearly every object is a one-off, the fittings have to carry the same authorial weight as the artwork.

Our partners produced furniture and decorative joinery for several of the hotel’s public-facing rooms. The pieces were finished in lacquer, natural stone and hand-applied gilding detail — chosen so that the joinery would sit with authority within The Mandrake’s maximalist, art-led atmosphere rather than read as standard hospitality fit-out.
