Our East London workshop is dedicated to straw marquetry, a rare and refined decorative craft in which split rye straw is hand-laid onto a substrate to form intricate geometric and figurative patterns. The workshop is led by a formally trained ebeniste whose education at one of Europe's foremost schools of decorative arts grounds the practice in a rigorous technical tradition. That classical training, combined with a deep specialism in straw marquetry, gives the work here an authority that few workshops can match.
The technique catches and reflects light from every angle, giving the finished surface a quality that no veneer or paint can replicate. Straws are dyed by hand to bespoke colour palettes, split and flattened, then laid one strand at a time onto panels, furniture surfaces and architectural features. The lead maker's Paris training in fine furniture and decorative arts informs every stage, from the geometry of the pattern to the precision of the finish.
Pieces produced here are commissioned for projects where genuine decorative ambition is required: feature walls, screens, headboards, cabinet doors, drinks units and architectural inserts. The craft is slow, precise and traditional, but the finished work sits as comfortably in a contemporary interior as in any historic one.
