Set in a vibrant city-centre location, surrounded by restaurants, bars and other cultural attractions, The Grand Hotel sets a new bar for luxury accommodation in Birmingham, offering high-end service and surroundings tailored for the needs of today's modern traveller. Our partners produced the furniture package with interior design by world-renowned Robert Angell Design International which reflects the passion and spirit of Birmingham, whilst paying homage to the building's stunning original features and history. The hotel has enjoyed an illustrious past, having played host to a long list of royalty and famous names including King George VI, Malcolm X, Charlie Chaplin, Winston Churchill and James Cagney.

Make Bespoke's partners supplied bespoke furniture for the hotel's guestrooms and public areas, producing pieces to the exacting standards required by the Robert Angell Design International scheme. Custom casegoods, upholstered seating and decorative furniture elements were finished in a palette of rich fabrics, polished brass and darkened timber, materials chosen to honour the building's Victorian grandeur while meeting the demands of a modern five-star operation.

The Grand reopened after a long restoration of its Grade II* listed Victorian fabric, with the original Italianate façade, marble staircase and gilded ballroom plasterwork brought back into use. Furniture brought into a building of that period and listing has to sit comfortably alongside the existing detail without competing with it — proportions referred to the room rather than to a generic hospitality module, and finishes selected for tonal alignment with the restored fabric.

Our partners produced a co-ordinated furniture package across guestrooms, suites and public areas, including casegoods, occasional tables, bar joinery and feature seating. Pieces were prototyped at workshop, signed off against Robert Angell’s reference imagery, and dry-fitted before delivery so the hotel handover programme — tight, with multiple trades closing out the same floors at the same time — was protected.
