historic French technique

Our Manchester workshop is dedicated to verre églomisé — the historic French decorative technique of applying gold and silver leaf to the reverse face of glass, often combined with hand-painted, engraved or etched detail. The result is a richly reflective decorative surface with extraordinary visual depth, used in luxury furniture, mirrored panels and architectural interiors.

Work here is produced almost entirely by hand. Each panel is laid up in reverse — image first, then the gold or silver leaf, then a protective backing — meaning the final design is read through the glass rather than across it. The technique gives verre églomisé its distinctive quality: a luminous surface that reflects light without compromising the precision of the decorative work beneath.

The workshop produces mirrored panels, cabinet door faces, drinks unit linings, table tops, decorative wall installations and architectural inserts. Each commission is developed in dialogue between the studio, the design team and the master gilder — historical reference work, contemporary designs and the kind of intricate, story-led compositions that the technique was made for.

A gilded-glass studio

The Manchester workshop sits in a city remade by industry and, more recently, by a strong design and maker resurgence. It is dedicated to verre églomisé, the art of gilding and painting on the reverse of glass.

Gold and metal leaf are laid onto the back of the glass and then worked, so the finished surface sits protected behind the pane and is seen through it. Each panel is built up in layers, with designs agreed in sample before the leaf is laid.
